I started with yoga after my 50th birthday. I was living in Moscow at that time and was invited to a promotional practice at the Indian Embassy there. Little did I know that this first step into the ancient secrets of yoga would transform not only my body but also totally change my lifestyle.
Being responsible for a multi-million dollar foreign investment (that grew to a multi-billion dollar business) in Russia was a job full of stress, long meetings and late nights with a lot of food and drinks. There was little time (and, to be honest, little interest) for any physical exercise.
The first session in the crowded room at the Indian cultural center in Moscow, led to more. Soon my wife and I were attending regular sessions once, and sometimes twice, a week. The type of yoga taught there was Hatha Yoga. The Indian yoga master was paid by the Indian Government to spread the ancient practice of yoga to Russians (and some odd foreigner like me) in Moscow. His interest to correct the postures of each individual participant was minimal. But still I discovered only after a couple of months some very positive changes in my rather fat and inflexible body.
To make a long story short, this first entry into the world of yoga and increased flexibility lead to some drastic lifestyle changes. Less alcohol (and later no spirit at all), less late dinners, healthier food in general, were only some of the most noticeable changes. Another change was that our travel destinations changed to places specialized in yoga.
